Report quickly on damaged school property

- – Bernama

THE Education Ministry has given a period of two weeks for all schools to submit an audit report to the district education office on the state of their school buildings and equipment that are at risk of causing an accident.

Its minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said his ministry would receive the audit report to enable immediate action to be taken to repair damaged infrastructure classified as an “emergency”after it was sent to the state education department.

“The procedure is to submit a form on damaged school property. However, this time we are asking only schools that are really dilapidated with faulty equipment to report ... only those that are in need of urgent repairs.” “We later look at the reports and then make a decision. It canbe a school gate, school field and other damaged or faulty items that are deemed dangerous and need immediate attention,” he told reporters after the Kedah state education department Aidilfitri gathering on Monday.

Mahdzir was commenting on issues involving deaths because of damaged school infrastructure, where a security guard at a school in Miri, Sarawak was killed by a falling school gate.

Prior to that incident, a Form Two student in Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tengku Indera Putera 2, Gua Musang in Kelantan was killed after being crushed by a falling goal post at the school field.
