M’sian team wins contest
A team of Malaysian students from the Institute of Teacher Education, Tuanku Bainun Campus in Penang, have been named as one of the top six winners in the International “Say It With Oxford Competition 2016”.
Team members comprising three first-year student-teachers Wong Chu Hui, Hamdiana Ossen and Lim Jie Yik each received a certificate, an Oxford Grammar Book and an Oxford Thesaurus.
They are studying the Bachelor of Education Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) programme.
Their lecturer Laysee Gregory who is also the Malaysian English Language Teaching Association (Melta) chapter leader, worked with her students to create an original and creative, short role-play video which was recorded and uploaded on YouTube.
In addition, she used the Oxford iSpeaker tool to train her students to improve their pronunciation and develop their speaking and conversation skills in the role-play.
The students explained that during the training, they became aware of their mistakes and even laughed at their own flaws when speaking English.
Through hardwork and practice, the students could feel themselves improving in a short period of time.
The competition was organised by the Oxford University Press in the United Kingdom. The other winners were Croatia (which was the champion), Vietnam, Russia, Poland and Brazil.
