Family living in fear of loan sharks

KLANG: Seventy-two-year-old Song Poh Lay had always led an independent life and enjoyed her solo outings and shopping jaunts.

But for the last one-and-a-half years, she has been stricken with such fear that she no longer leaves her home in Taman Meru near here without an escort.

Poh Lay’s nightmares started after her house was first splashed with red paint by loan sharks who also left a warning letter and hell notes in her letterbox in late 2014.

“Initially we were puzzled as to why we were attacked and then we found out that my sister-in-law’s brother-in-law had taken a loan from them,’’ said Poh Lay’s remisier son Tiew Woon Lek, 47.

(The borrower and Tiew’s younger brother were married to the sisters.)

The harassment has continued with the recent attack taking place on Aug 22 when Tiew found a warning note in the letterbox.

Tiew said it was ridiculous that his family was being harassed given the

borrower was not even closely related to them or lived in their home.

“We only have little connection with them by way of my brother’s wife,’’ Tiew told a press conference here which was organised by Kapar MCA chief Datuk Song Kee Chai.

Tiew said he has lodged five police reports since but the harassment still continued.

“I lodged two police reports in November 2014 after red paint was splashed on the gate and wall and a warning letter was stuffed in the postbox,’’ said Tiew.

He subsequently lodged police reports in May, June and August this year when the harassment continued.

Tiew, who lives in his mother’s house with his wife and two teenage sons, says he is constantly worried about her safety.

“My mother is alone at home almost throughout the day when we are at work or at school,’’ he added.

Meanwhile, Song said he had spoken to the police and was told investigations were being carried out.

“I will be bringing the matter to the Selangor police chief as well as the Inspector-General of Police because the harassment cannot be allowed to continue,’’ said Song.
