Rain or shine, Khairul hopes to bounce back quickly at Silverstone

PETALING JAYA: It could be a wet and slippery affair in the British Motorcycle Grand Prix at Silverstone this Sunday but Moto3 rider Khairul Idham Pawi is not complaining.

Expect the Malaysian rookie rider to go full throttle if rain comes down as forecasted.

The 17-year-old from Batu Gajah is determined to make a quick rebound in the 12th round of the world championship after missing out on a great opportunity to claim a third career podium two weeks ago in the Czech Republic.

Khairul, with five laps to go, crashed while holding on to second position.

It was certainly a frustrating end for the youngster who put up an astonishing charge from the back of the grid earlier.

The Honda Team Asia rider surged his way from 29th on the starting grid to 14th by the end of the first lap under wet conditions.

“I was very disappointed with the outcome. In the race, I just tried to save myself and be consistent but on lap 15, I lost the rear and got high-sided,” said Khairul. “I thought I had a good chance to get another podium in the wet although the conditions were very difficult.

“But I had to accept it. Even if you made a good start from the lower position and climbed up to the second, one crash ruins everything.”

Khairul has the distinction as the only rookie in the world championship this year to win not once – but twice.

He made the nation proud by mastering the wet conditions to chalk his maiden win in Argentina in April and showed it was no fluke by taking another brilliant win under similar circumstances in Sachsenring, Germany last month.

“I am sorry for my team because they always work very hard for me. For my next race, I will come back stronger ... whether dry or wet.

“My approach is the same. I hope to adapt to the circuit fast and hope for good pace on race day,” added Khairul, who is 11th in the championship standings on 54 points.
