Liow: MCA’s transformation efforts showing success

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The Chinese community recognises the efforts by MCA to transform their lives for the better, said party president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

He said MCA played an important role in providing a check-and-balance in the Government to ensure that future generations continue to enjoy life in a secular state.

Speaking to reporters after receiving 200 membership forms from Cheras MCA chief Datuk Sim Eng Peng at the division’s annual general meeting here yesterday, Liow said the new recruits, mostly youth members, strengthened the party as it regained momentum after losses in the two previous general elections.

“This proves that MCA’s transformation programmes to reform the party are successful and recognised by the people,” he added.

He assured the people that MCA would not bow to power and would continue to uphold democracy, freedom and justice in the country.

“We want to see a diverse society living together in peace, harmony and prosperity,” he said.

Earlier in his speech, Liow criticised the opposition pact for making empty promises, spreading hate and stirring up racial sentiments to garner votes.

He said the promises made by the Opposition, including the formation of a welfare state, had all gone down the drain.

“What they brought is the Private Member’s Bill (to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act) tabled by PAS president Datuk Seri Hadi Awang in Parliament.

“We want the Chinese community to know that only when MCA is in the Government, we can have the strength and resources to bring changes to them,” he said.

Liow also said MCA would continue to support the multi-stream education system in Malaysia.

Later at night, Liow joined thousands to celebrate the 33rd Chinese Cultural Festival organised by the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall.
