Ong: MCA sure of regaining Chinese support

-

BUKIT MERTAJAM: MCA is confident of winning back the support of the Chinese community here in the next general election, said its secretary-general Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan.

“In the past, we could see that they totally rejected MCA but, now, the scenario has changed.

“I’m confident that the results would be better than the past election,” he said after officiating the Bukit Mertajam MCA division meeting here yesterday.

Ong, however, said there was still work to be done to achieve that goal.

He also refuted claims that the party was no longer relevant in Penang, promising that it would continue to work hard for all Penangites.

“We have more or less identified the candidates but the decision is not finalised due to the redelineation exercise by the Election Commission (EC),” he said, adding that the party would contest all the seats it fought for in Penang in the last election.

Also present were Penang MCA deputy chairman Tan Teik Cheng, who is also the division chief, and state MCA secretary Dr Tan Chuan Hong.

Later, Ong attended the Nibong Tebal MCA division meeting in Taman Merbok. Also present was its division chief Tan Cheng Liang.

In Ipoh, Perak MCA chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon said the party stood a good chance of recapturing the Teja state seat.

“Based on the results of the last by-elections in Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar, we are getting back the support of the community.

“The state party is also more united than before under the leadership of the party president and deputy president,” he told reporters after the opening of the Gopeng MCA annual general meeting by MCA vice-president Datuk Dr Hou Kok Chung yesterday.

The Teja seat is currently held by PKR’s Chang Lih Kang, who won against MCA’s Yew Sau Kham with a 2,082-vote majority.

Other than Teja, Simpang Pulai and Sungai Rapat also come under the Gopeng parliamentary constituency.
