Building a strong foundation
THE Tune Libra Scholarship has been launched at Epsom College in Malaysia (ECiM) by board of governors chairman Tan Sri Tony Fernandes and member Datuk Kamarudin Meranun as well as ECiM headmaster Martin George.
“It is our shareholders vision to provide the opportunity to deserving students; bright and intelligent students without the financial resource, to receive the most comprehensive, all-round education experience in the region.
“When we built the college, we wanted children to experience what we did when we were in boarding schools ourselves.
“We want to take it a step further by giving the opportunity to students who may not be able to afford the tuition fees,” said Fernandes.
As the college grows, he said the aim is to maintain a 30% quota of student population at Epsom College in Malaysia as subsidised; be it through full or partial scholarships.
Worth RM20mil, the Tune Libra Scholarship targets to benefit approximately 100 students.
It is established specifically to provide deserving Malaysian students with the opportunity to pursue their studies at ECiM.
Fernandes urged students to apply for the scholarship and not to be discouraged by anyone or any obstacles that may come their way. “If you fail, try again. “Do not let your dream disappear,” he said.
To signify the launch of the Tune Libra Scholarship, Fernandes, Kamarudin and George planted a symbolic rainbow gum tree at ECiM in Bandar Enstek to illustrate the importance of nurture towards grooming a successful individual.
George said education is more than academic results.
“At Epsom College, while focusing on academic excellence, we also emphasise on mental wellbeing, happiness, teamwork, living in a community and responsibilities,” he added.
The Tune Libra Scholarship is structured into two categories namely Seed Scholars and Branch Scholars.
Seed Scholars are the brightest students who deserve the best education but do not have the financial means to do so.
These scholars would be means-tested and fully-funded for their A Level studies at ECiM. The fund is looking to place 20 Seed Scholars in 2017.
Branch Scholars are so-named because the first cohort of academically gifted scholars will enrol in the two-year IGCSE Programme commencing in Year 10 and the 18-month A Level Programme in January 2017. The scholars, via application, will receive up to 30% scholarship on published fees.
