ADDING to its joyous 28th anniversary celebration, Xim Phou Moon Welfare Society (XPM) made a contribution worth RM15,000, which will go towards sponsoring The Star’s Newspaper-in-Education (NiE) pullouts and The Star e-Paper to Malaysian schools.

XPM founder-cum-president Datuk Tan Leong Hoo handed the mock cheque to Loo Phan Kooi who is special officer in the Star Media Group Berhad group managing director and chief executive officer’s office during the welfare organisation’s anniversary gala.

An ardent supporter of education pullouts by The Star, XPM was one of the first organisations to answer the call in sponsoring Step Up the year it was first launched in 2011.

Tan said that The Star’s education pullouts are wellknown for adding fun to English class lessons. “Teachers and pupils enjoy using them. And when pupils enjoy learning English, it helps them remember better.

“The Step Up pullout is beneficial in helping pupils prepare for their UPSR examination. We have been sponsoring the pullout for many years and we have received good feedback from teachers,” Tan added.

The XPM anniversary charity dinner saw donations of more than RM280,000 to Malaysian and foreign charity organisations as well as schools.

Established in 1988, XPM is a non-profit and non-religious organisation that provides financial and education support as well as provisions to the poor and underprivileged in Malaysia and overseas.

Aside from promoting eco-awareness and waste separation, the proceeds obtained from their recycling project have been channelled to help various charitable organisations and those in need, especially in the field of education.

As of 2015, the society has donated more than RM13mil.

Tan, who is highly supportive of the education pullout by The Star, said that XPM hopes to continue to aid schools with the educational resource for many years to come.

Step Up, is a 24-page educational workbook-cum-activity pullout designed for primary schools. It is a bilingual English language resource for teachers in vernacular and national schools.

Another education pullout by The Star, the NiE provides ready-made newspaper activities to inject fun and authenticity into English lessons. This 12-page syllabus-based pullout is divided into elementary, intermediate and advanced levels, and caters to primary and secondary schools.

The Step Up pullout with Bahasa Malaysia translations is published on alternate Tuesdays, while the version with Chinese translations comes out on alternate Thursdays. Endorsed by the Education Ministry, the NiE pullout consists of 33 issues and is published every Wednesday.
