Science fair extends competition deadline

-

DO you have a cool invention that you would like to showcase? Then take it to the Kuala Lumpur Engineering Science Fair (KLESF).

This year, the event will be held at the Mines International Exhibition & Convention Centre (MIECC) in KL from Nov 4 to 6.

The annual KLESF aims to promote interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) among students.

It is supported by the Asean Academy of Engineering and Technology, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology and the Institution of Engineers Malaysia.

The KLESF Challenge is a component of the fair that is open to students who have created innovative STEM inventions.

To give more schools a chance to participate, the deadline to register for the challenge has been extended to Oct 28.

Registration is free and there are two categories — Primary (for students aged 12 and below) and Secondary (for those aged 13 to 18).

The international competition has registration from over 200 Malaysian schools, as well as teams from Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines and Myanmar.

Projects will be assessed based on originality and innovation, execution, quality and impact, and presentation and communication. Each team should have no more than three participants and one teacher.

Champions of the challenge will receive RM500, with the silver and bronze winners getting RM200 and RM100, respectively. They will all receive a certificate each.

“The KLESF Challenge was formed to encourage and motivate students and schools to exhibit their STEM projects,” said UTAR vice president of research, development and commercialisation Prof Dr Lee Sze Wei.

Participants will be given a booth at the fair, where they can present their innovation to visitors and judges.

This not only gives them exposure but develops their soft skills as well, said Prof Lee.

The organisers are also inviting exhibitors from universities, non-governmental organisations and the industry to take part in the fair.
