Mourinho says heartfelt sorry to fans after United’s miserable loss

-

Jose Mourinho is no longer The Special One, not after suffering his heaviest English Premier League defeat as a manager. The Manchester United boss issued a “heartfelt” apology to the fans after his side’s 4-0 humiliation by Chelsea. “They kept going for 90 minutes in an unbelievable way, the fans that we have all around the world they are obviously with a very bad feeling and I feel so sorry for them. I have to apologise for that and the only thing I can say is that I am Man United 100%, not 99% and 1% for Chelsea or any other club and because of that I feel deeply the situation,” Mourinho said.

LONDON: Jose Mourinho admits that his side have paid the price for “incredible defensive mistakes” as he suffered his heaviest English Premier League defeat as a manager.

Only against Barcelona in November 2010 did he lose by a greater margin in all competitions, and it’s a result that is hard for the Manchester United boss to swallow.

Speaking after the 4-0 loss to Chelsea on Sunday, Mourinho said: “It started badly after a few seconds. We are close to the 1-1 and after another defensive mistake and it is 2-1. You come with a strategy, you can not concede a goal in the way we did.

“We were coming to have an offensive approach, we wanted to create chances, we showed that after the 1-0. The second and the third were counter-attack goals. If we score a goal like we almost did for the 2-1 the game would be different.”

A howler from the United defence after just 34 seconds, that let Pedro score, set the tone for the Portuguese’s embarrassing afternoon.

Goals from Gary Cahill, Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante killed United off and left them six points off the top of the table and only seven off the drop zone.

“It is one of those days when you give the advantage to opponents by doing nothing. We made incredible defensive mistakes, individual mistakes and you pay for that,” said Mourinho.

The last time United lost by four or more goals away from home in the Premier League was against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in 1999.

“In terms of points, we got zero points, we lose three points. We are six points from the top, three from the top four, we now need to win matches.

“We need to win our matches now, which are not easy, we need to win to close that gap, after these last three matches, we made two out of nine, we now need points,” Mourinho said.

The 53-year-old stood in front of MUTV cameras to issue a “heartfelt” apology to the fans after his side’s miserable display.

“They kept going for 90 minutes in an unbelievable way, the fans that we have all around the world they are obviously with a very bad feeling and I feel so sorry for them,” Mourinho said.

“I have to apologise for that and the only thing I can say is that I am Man United 100%, not 99% and 1% for Chelsea or any other club and because of that I feel deeply the situation.

“But there is only one answer, like I was telling the players, there is only one answer – training tomorrow and we fight on.” – The Sun, London
