The 21- year- old Chi Wing crushed Misbun Ramdan Misbun 21-19, 21-8 in a 31-minute one-sided men’s singles final at the National Championships in Ulu Kinta, Perak, yesterday.

Many had turned up at the Sri Perdana Hall hoping for an explosive match but there were no fireworks as Ramdan ran out of steam after giving a tough fight in the opening game.

While Chi Wing stood rock-solid, Ramdan made it easier for his opponent by sending countless shots beyond the baseline in the second game.

Chi Wing, who took one hour and 25 minutes to upset Liew Daren a day earlier, was pleased he finished strongly in the final.

“I came well-prepared. I watched Ramdan’s game in the semi-final and had an idea of his game plan,” said Chi Wing, who took home RM20,000.

“I expected long rallies and a tougher fight. I was more patient. I waited for chances to attack ... it was easier than expected but I guess Ramdan was tired.

“But this second win is more meaningful to me. Last year, we did not have good players like Ramdan, Liew Daren, Zulfadli Zulkifli and Soong Joo Ven ... so it feels good to win this one.”

Now that the expectations will be higher on the two-time national champion, Chi Wing promises to keep the momentum going.

“My goal remains the same – to break into the top 60 by the end of this year with more consistent performances,” said the world No. 144.

Disappointment was written all over Ramdan’s face but the 26-yearold Nusa Mahsuri shuttler can still walk tall despite his defeat.

“I lost some control of the game. Now, I know my limitations and I’ll come back stronger,” said Ramdan, who played from the qualifying round.

“This is a good way to get my badminton career back in order,” added the eldest son of Datuk Misbun Sidek.

Ramdan was playing in his first tournament since he went under the knife for a ruptured Achilles tendon in 2015.
