Nur Dini’s guide to dealing with perverts: Shout loudly, make a scene

PETALING JAYA: After a harrowing experience on a LRT coach on Monday morning, Nur Dini Van Haeren (pic) is urging victims of perverts to stand up for themselves by shouting out loud and making a scene.

“Shame the guy if you have to, by taking pictures and videos. Make sure perverts will not get away with what they have done!” she said.

It was what she did when she was harassed by a man with “hungry eyes” when she stepped into the coach at the Kelana Jaya station that morning.

The 21-yearold college student, an intern at a hotel, noticed the man, who later made lewd remarks at her.

“What is your problem?!” she shouted at him but the man responded with more smiles.

“I then lifted my phone to take pictures of him to shame him. He covered his face and got off two stations later, at Taman Paramount,” she said.

Nur Dini shared her terrifying experience on Facebook.

“I wish I could have done more to protect myself but I was just so shaken ... I don’t have the words to describe it. It left me trembling and in tears, and I just wish no one would have to go through that anywhere they are,” she wrote.

In responding to her post, Rapid Rail, a Prasarana subsidiary which operates Rapid KL urban rail services, contacted Nur Dini to get more details and subsequently secured footage of the suspect from CCTV recordings.

The 37-year-old suspect was caught at the Taman Jaya LRT station on Thursday and was handed to the police, Rapid Rail chief executive officer Datuk Zohari Sulaiman said in a statement yesterday.

When contacted, Nur Dini expressed relief that the man had been arrested.

“But my heart still feels a bit uneasy knowing that this similar thing could happen again, whether to me, or anyone else. I also feel very scared that I could meet this very same person on the train, or in public again,” she added.

But it would not stop her from taking public transport because “public transport is the best way to get around and those people are everywhere in our society”.

However, she will be more vigilant from now on.

Nur Dini thanked the LRT operator for the swift response and keeping her updated on the progress of tracking down the suspect.

Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Zani Che Din confirmed that the suspect was in police custody.

He said police would decide today whether to remand the suspect to facilitate investigations.

The case is being probed under Section 509 of the Penal Code for using words or gestures intended to insult the modesty of a person.
