Girl claims trial to driving under the influence of drugs and causing the death of a motorist.

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Part-time model Ng Pei Ven, who allegedly drove against traffic on the NorthSouth Expressway (NSE) two weeks ago, claimed trial in a magistrate’s court here to driving under the influence of drugs and causing the death of a person.

Ng had on March 17 also pleaded not guilty to another charge of taking amphetamine.

In court yesterday, Ng, 19, loudly said in Mandarin “wo bu ren cui” (I don’t plead guilty) when asked to make a plea after the charge was read out and explained to her by a court interpreter.

She denied the charge under Section 44(1)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987 of driving under the influence of drugs and causing the death of Mohamad Fandi Rosli, 26, at about 7.50am at the 134th kilometre of the NSE on March 14.

If convicted, she faces three to 10 years in jail, a fine of between RM8,000 and RM20,000, and a fiveyear suspension of her driving licence.

Deputy public prosecutor Datuk Razali Che Ani applied for bail to be set at RM10,000 yesterday, but Ng’s lawyer Parmjit Singh sought for a lower sum.

Magistrate Jamaliah Abd Manap allowed bail at RM7,000 with two sureties and set May 12 to mention the case pending the post-mortem report of the deceased and the chemist report.

The case will be mentioned together with Ng’s earlier drug charge.

She had allegedly tested positive for amphetamine at the Seberang Prai district police headquarters at about 5pm on March 14.

The offence under Section 15(1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 carries a fine of not more than RM5,000 or a jail term of not more than two years.

Ng’s parents, who were present in court yesterday, then posted her bail.

Ng, who is said to hold a card for disabled persons (Kad OKU), allegedly for being a slow learner, appeared calm during the trial and was also accompanied by her parents when she arrived in court yesterday.

They arrived in a silver sedan with Ng’s right arm still in a sling due to the accident.
