Honest officers rewarded for rejecting bribes
KUALA LUMPUR: Kpl Nor Azri Rusli was offered bribes – twice in a day – but he thumbed his nose at them.
It happened on May 14 last year when he was serving in Sarawak.
He had stopped a foreigner during a routine roadblock and found that he did not have a driving licence.
He said the Indonesian offered him RM100.
“I warned him but he was persistent. When he tried to force the money into my hands, I arrested him,” he said.
Later, another offender tried to give him RM50.
For his honesty, the 31-year-old policeman was awarded special honours at the Police Day celebrations yesterday.
Kpl Nor Azri, who now serves in the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement at the Keningau district police headquarters in Sabah, received a certificate ( Sijil Tolak Rasuah).
He said that he was happy to make his family proud of him.
“This award will motivate me and my colleagues to work harder.” said Kpl Nor Azri, who has been with the force for 12 years.
Kpl Nor Azri was among 16 policemen who received special honours for their professionalism.
Six were awarded the Integrity Award while another 10 received certificates for rejecting bribes.
Kpl John @ Adam Anak Gilbert, 53, recounted how a suspected drug addict tried to entice him with a RM200 bribe.
“I had stopped this man as he was behaving suspiciously. I saw marks on his arm, perhaps from needle injections.
“As per Standard Operating Procedure, I had to detain him and bring him to the police station for a urine test.”
To avoid arrest, the man offered cash to Kpl John.
Kpl John, who is with the Miri police district headquarters, warned him against doing so but the man persisted with the offer.
“Eventually, I arrested him for attempted bribery,” he said. The man, ironically, tested negative for drugs later.
Kpl John also recalled a separate incident when a Pakistani immigrant offered him RM200.
Another recipient, Kpl Saliza Azrina Abdul Aziz, said she was patrolling in Kajang, Selangor on New Year’s Day in 2015 when she stopped a man who behaving suspiciously in a car.
“We managed to arrest him and when we brought him into the police car, he tried to bribe me,” said Kpl Saliza Azrina, who is with the Kajang district police headquarters.
“Later at the police station, he tried to bribe me again but I refused,” she said, adding that she arrested him for attempted bribery.
