Use CCTVs to nab red light jumpers

- SAMUEL YESUIAH Seremban

LATELY there has been an increase in the number of motorcyclists and motorists who are beating the red lights on our roads.

My friends have had some unpleasant and costly encounters at traffic lights.

The rear ends of their cars have been crashed into when they stop at the traffic lights.

Motorists who follow too close behind bang into the car when they brake at the traffic lights.

When confronted the car drivers blame my friends for stopping at the traffic lights when the light was amber.

According to them my friends should have sped past the traffic light when it was amber.

We all know that the colour amber means get ready to stop.

Unfortunately for many drivers it means ‘go fast and beat the light’.

Today the number of recalcitrant drivers who just beat the red lights with no thought or concern is slowly increasing.

They drive through red lights without any form of regard for the safety of others or even their own.

It is mind boggling to see them whiz past all other vehicles that have stopped at the red light. What makes them so ignorant and arrogant?

Some car drivers even have the audacity to honk at the driver in front to go through the red light.

Some motorists will overtake you rudely to beat the red lights.

It is scary to imagine the consequences of their actions if they are involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle from the opposite direction. I have seen some of these ‘red light beaters’ having close shaves and close misses.

These ‘red light beaters’ think that they are skilful and able to manoeuvre past the on-coming traffic and get away with it.

The Malay proverb sepandai-pandai tupai melompat, akhirnya jatuh ketanah juga (no matter how clever a person is, he will make a mistake in the end) applies to drivers who beat red lights.

One day they may not be so lucky and then it could be too late to regret their foolish actions.

And innocent drivers who obey traffic lights may become accident victims because of these ‘red light beaters’.

Sadly many motorcyclists top the list for beating red traffic lights at road junctions. And as it is they top the fatalities on roads.

Hopefully the authorities will nab these offenders who blatantly beat red lights before it becomes rampant.

These road users should be slapped with a fine or have their driving licences suspended if they are repeat offenders.

It would be a good idea to install CCTV cameras at all traffic lights to nab these offenders who are dicing with death and challenging the law.
