Nani wins two events at youth athletics meet
KUALA LUMPUR: Nani Shahirah Maryata turned out to be Malaysia’s star performer in the 12th South-East Asian (SEA) Youth Athletics Championships in the Philippines.
The 16-year-old from Pahang made a memorable debut as she clinched two golds in the two-day championships, which ended at the City of Ilagan Sports Complex in Isabela yesterday.
On Monday, Nani hurled a distance of 36.48m to win the girls’ discus. Yesterday, she did well to win the shot putt with a throw of 13.91m.
“I never expected to win two golds in my debut. It’s my best achievement in an international meet. I am delighted with my efforts,” said Nani.
The Malaysian contingent did well to win a total of six golds, six silvers and six bronzes.
The other golds were delivered by Nor Allyah Abdul Rahman (25.25) in the girls’ 200m, Karmentina Nadia Quadra (15.02) in the girls’ 100m hurdles, Ahmad Rustam Razali (53.81m) in the boys’ javelin and Muhammad Nazri Mustafa (14.86m) in boys’ triple jump.
Muhammad Solihin Jamal bagged two silvers in the boys’ 100m (10.92) and 200m (22.46). The other silvers were delivered by Muhammad Ilham Suhaimi ( 48.93, boys’ 400m), Nur Ayna Nuha Maton (40.04m; girls’ javelin), Norashikin Abas (11.99m; girls’ triple jump) and Ruslem Zikry Putra Roseli (55.22; boys’ 400m hurdles)
Mohammad Amirul Arif Mohd Azri also bagged two medals – both bronzes – in the boys’ 800m (1:58.06) and 1,500m (4:11.73).
The other bronze medallists were Muhammad Zakaria Minsuri (14.45; boys’ 110m hurdles), Dinesh Varma Selvam (6:27.34; boys’ 2,000m steeplechase), Nor Allyah Abdul Rahman (12.48; girls’ 100m) and Nur Ashikin Abas (11.99m; girls’ triple jump).
