Sports fans can look forward to extensive SEA Games coverage
PETALING JAYA: Sports fans in South-East Asia are in for a treat during the Aug 19-31 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games.
They will be spoilt for choice as 24 out of the 38 sports contested at the biennial Games will be broadcast live. The country’s three leading broadcasters — RTM, Astro Arena and Media Prima — will be joining forces in the production.
The Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (Masoc) have appointed RTM as the host broadcaster while Astro Arena and Media Prima will act as the official broadcasters.
The sports to be given live coverage are athletics, aquatics (diving, swimming, synchronised swimming and water polo), archery, badminton, basketball, boxing, bowling, billiards and snooker, cycling (track), football, gymnastics (artistic and rhythmic), hockey, ice skating, kara- te, muay thai, netball, pencak silat, rugby 7s, sepaktakraw, squash, table tennis, taekwondo, weightlifting and wushu.
Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has hailed Masoc’s efforts in providing the most extensive live coverage in the history of the Games.
“Masoc is working hard to deliver the best of the SEA Games, not only to the South-East Asian viewers but also those from other parts of the world. These fans can watch either through Internet streaming or televised broadcasting.
“The live coverage of the 24 sports makes up more than 60% of the total sporting events at the Games,” said Khairy after officiating the Games’ broadcasters meeting here yesterday.
A total of 15 broadcasters from seven Asean countries and one from Switzerland attended the meeting.
