Another London fix
Wee Wern goes for one more knee surgery
PETALING JAYA: Low Wee Wern is going to London for another surgery to get her squash career back on track.
The 26-year-old has not been her usual on court since she first suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury on her left knee in April 2015.
She underwent an operation in Penang that year but encountered complications on her comeback trail. She was then forced to go for a second surgery in London in December last year.
And due to her absence from the world circuit for the past four months, Wee Wern’s world ranking has dropped to No. 30.
She was hailed as Nicol David’s replacement at one time, having been ranked a career-best world No. 5 in 2014.
Wee Wern is now keeping her fingers crossed that she will recover fully from the latest surgery.
“I went for a CT scan earlier this month. I got the green light from the surgeon in London to go through the surgery on April 5,” said Wee Wern.
“I really hope I can finally return to action after this surgery.
“The second surgery I did in London was just to strengthen my knee. Now, it’s to fix the ACL, medial collateral ligament (MCL) and iliotibial band (ITB) in my knee.
“I’ve missed so many tournaments over the last few months. It has been really frustrating being on the sidelines. I’ve been doing rehabilitation to keep myself in shape.
“I do hope to make a comeback before the end of the year. Hopefully I’ll be ready for next year’s Commonwealth Games (in Gold Coast, Australia) in April and the Asian Games (in Jakarta) in October,” said Wee Wern, who will leave for London tomorrow.
