WEE WERN GOES FOR ANOTHER OP IN LONDON
PETALING JAYA: Rookie professional golfer Daeng Abdul Rahman Abdul Aziz wants to feature in the Asian Tour next season.
And the 16-year-old hopes to secure his playing privileges through the Asian Development Tour (ADT) where the top five money leaders at the end of the season earn automatic Tour cards for next year.
Daeng has every reason to be upbeat after two encouraging starts on the PGM Tour. He only joined the play-for-pay ranks earlier this month.
He made his pro bow at the Palm Closed Championship, finishing joint 13th. He impressed again with a joint 10th place at the ADT-sanctioned Northport Glenmarie Championship.
Daeng is 35th in the PGM Tour Order of Merit after earning RM6,455.
On the ADT Tour, his pay cheque of US$815 (RM3,625) has put him at No. 40 on the money list.
Daeng is now keen to emulate compatriots Gavin Kyle Green and Arie Irawan Fauzi who both won their passage to the Asian Tour via the ADT.
“My goal is to finish my rookie season in the top five on both Tours,” said Daeng ahead of today’s tee-off for the RM185,000 PGM Port Dickson Closed Championship at the Port Dickson Golf and Country Club.
“It’s very rewarding to play on the ADT. Hopefully I’ll do well enough to get promoted to the Asian Tour after failing to make it through the Qualifying School in January.
“I need to win at least once and finish consistently in the top five to stand a chance. But I know what I’m capable of.
“I will also be travelling for the ADT events abroad. I don’t intent to play only those sanctioned events at home,” added Daeng, who created PGM Tour history when he won the Danau Closed Championship at the age of 15.
