KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court sentenced two men responsible for the grenade attack which injured eight people at the Movida club to 25 years’ jail each.

Justice Nordin Hassan meted out the sentence against Imam Wahyudin Karjono, 21, and Jonius Ondie @ Jahali, 25, after they pleaded guilty to the charge yesterday.

He also jailed Imam Wahyudin and Jonius Ondie an additional 10 years each for giving support to the Islamic State (IS) terror group.

Justice Nordin ordered the sentences against Imam Wahyudin to run from June 29 last year and for Jonius Ondie from July 1 last year, the days they were arrested.

However, he ordered that the sentences run concurrently, meaning that Imam Wahyudin and Jonius Ondie would serve 25 years’ jail each.

The two had previously claimed trial to the charges but changed their plea yesterday.

In his judgment, Justice Nordin said there were eight witnesses called to testify in the trial. He described as a very serious offence the hurling of a grenade at a public place which left eight people injured with some suffering serious injuries.

“You should have avoided the act of throwing the bomb at the nightclub and I would like to say that your act caused chaos in the country,” he said.

It was established that both accused had planned to bomb clubs or pubs to extend their ideology in supporting the IS group and had obtained two hand grenades for the purpose.

On June 28, last year, both of them had targeted the Movida club as their target after their main target, the Pitbull club, was found closed.

In mitigation, counsel Wan Azwan Aiman who acted for Imam Wahyudin, said his client was a young offender and was 20 years and six months when he committed the offence. He said his client had repented.

Jonius Ondie’s counsel P.A. Sharon submitted that her client, who was the fourth of six siblings, had only a Standard Two education.

Imam Wahyudin and Jonius Ondie were charged under Section 130C(1)(b) of the Penal Code with bombing the club at 2am on June 28 last year.

They were also accused of giving support to the IS group via Telegram application group, “gagak hitam” on March 30 and June 15, 2016 and were charged under Section 130J(1)(a) of the same Code.
