KOTA KINABALU: The two young lovers had apparently run off together before – but their latest tryst ended in tragedy when the girl’s older brother allegedly intervened, resulting in the teenage boy’s death.

Mohd Ayieruchizamsyah Lambang, 16 (pic), had returned home with a bloody nose at about 7.30pm on Sunday and told his mother that an unknown person had attacked him, police said.

Tawau police chief Asst Comm Fadil Marsus said the Form Four student of SMK Kuhara in Tawau, then went into his room immediately and slept on the floor.

At about 7.30am on Monday, he said, the mother went into his room at their Kg Pisang house in east Tawau, and found the boy dead.

Upon checking, she found head and facial injuries that she had not noticed the night before.

ACP Fadil said police have arrested a 19-year-old labourer without documents. He is believed to be the brother of the victim’s girlfriend.

He said initial investigations showed that the victim, the third of five children, had gone to the Taman Sentosa playground to meet his 15-year-old girlfriend at about 6pm on Sunday when the suspect, her brother, spotted them.

The suspect is said to have scolded both of them and asked the teenager where he was planning to take the girl but the boy, who was frightened, just kept quiet, ACP Fadil said.

He added that the suspect ordered his sister to go home and then punched the victim, who tried to flee. The suspect then allegedly grabbed a stick to hit the boy, who slipped on the muddy ground and fell.

According to ACP Fadil, two pas- sers-by stopped the suspect and allowed the boy to run home.

He said police believe that the suspect’s motive was to stop the boy from continuing to see the girl, who had run away from home with him previously.

Police have brought the girl in for questioning, while the suspect was handed over to police by members of the public.

Police also recovered a piece of wood believed to have been used as a weapon.
