Malaysia and Canada to jointly fight IS threat
Malaysia and Canada will be working together to counter terrorism threats from Islamic State (IS).
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said there was very positive response on how Canada could contribute to the fight against the evil ideology of IS.
He was speaking after Canadian National Defence Minister Harjit Singh Sajjan called on him at his office yesterday.
“We know we have a responsibility to the world.
“Hearing about the challenges directly shows us where Canada can assist, and allows us to work in good collaboration,” Harjit said.
Hishammuddin said peacekeeping missions were also a priority for both countries.
“We had a comprehensive discussion and decided to work immediately in peacekeep- ing efforts, between our two countries.
“And also how Canada can be more involved with Malaysia,” he said.
Asked if there were any plans for more joint military exercises, both ministers said cooperation would be strengthened.
“When militaries train together, they are able to build relationships.
“So when the time comes, we already know how to cooperate,” Harjit said.
“But military operations alone cannot solve the problem of growing global terrorism.”
Harjit also visited the Canadian warship HMCS Winnipeg which was docked at the Boustead Cruise Centre in Port Klang.
He said there was also a need to look at reducing conflict around the world as well as find ways to stop the recruitment of people into terrorist organisations.
