Major shake-up in Melaka

IGP: Phase one of the reshuffle starts with transfers of officers

-

KUALA LUMPUR: A major shakeup of the Melaka police, which is under the spotlight for corrupt practices, has begun.

InspectorGeneral of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, who revealed this, said phase one of the reshuffle involved the transfer of several officers out of Melaka.

“We will continue to act. We do not condone misconduct and illegal activities involving the Royal Malaysian Police.

“It is a challenge we must overcome,” he told a press conference in Bukit Aman after launching a blood donation campaign yesterday.

Khalid, who will visit Melaka police contingent tomorrow, said the corrupt allegations needed to be investigated.

He said these allegations included that of lowerranking policemen being “forced” to take bribes from illegal gambling racket, in order to pacify their superiors.

“We will investigate this. We must also let the MACC investigate,” he added.

The IGP urged police personnel to report to Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standard Compliance Department if they were pressured or intimidated by their superiors to resort to anything illegal.

“The department has given ample room to all in the police force to report cases of misconduct or inappropriate action.

“They can report in person or online. They can even opt to be anonymous,” he said, adding that there was no excuse for colluding with gambling and drug trafficking syndicates.

To date, Bukit Aman has arrested over 20 personnel involved with drug syndicates.

In Putrajaya, the remand of the police corporal and an alleged middleman involved in the protection racket in Melaka has been extended.

Magistrate Nik Isfahanie Tasnim Wan Ab Rahman allowed the remand order to be extended for six days until May 30.

The 52yearold corporal, attached with the Secret Societies, Gambling and Vice Division (D7),was arrested on May 17 by MACC, while the middleman, 32, was arrested the following day.

Their initial remand orders ended yesterday.
