PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s very own cheerleading competition CHEER is back for the 18th year running.

CHEER 2017 was launched at Space@XOX, Sunway Pyramid, yesterday by Star Media Group group chief operating officer Calvin Kan and XOX Bhd group chief executive officer Ng Kok Heng.

Declaring CHEER 2017 open for registration, Kan said: “In its 18th installation, CHEER returns to ever increasing popularity. Once deemed merely as a rally to support other sports, cheerleading has now grown to become a competitive sport in its own right. Evolving from school-based competition, competitive cheerleading now encompasses a variety of categories, across even collegiate levels.”

Lauding Star Media Group for providing a healthy platform like CHEER up till university level, Ng said a youth programme like CHEER promoted team building, leadership, hard work, and an active lifestyle that was crucial towards building a healthy and progressive community.

“Towards this end, XOX Mobile hopes to continue supporting CHEER in all the future years.”

To kick off the launch, there was a short performance by cheerleaders from last year’s champions for High School Junior All-Girls – Anselm from SMK Infant Jesus Convent, Melaka and University Co-Ed Elite – SUC from Sunway University College.

CHEER is known for its young competitors’ jaw-dropping stunts and lively acrobatics.

The competition is open to all secondary schools nationwide.

Each school is allowed to submit a maximum of three entries, one team per category, or two teams in the same category.

There are four categories – High School Junior All-Girl, High School Senior All-Girl, High School Senior Co-Ed (with All-Boys and Mixed Teams) and University Co-Ed Elite.

Each team can have a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 16 participants and is to perform a three-minute routine.

CHEER 2017 Grand Finals will be a one-day event at Tropicana City Mall on Aug 19.

As part of the promotional campaign of CHEER 2017, a roadshow will be held at TGV One Utama on June 6, and a one-day CHEER clinic will be conducted in July.

Mobile telecommunication product and service provider XOX Mobile is the official partner for CHEER 2017, which is organised by Star Media Group’s youth platform R.AGE, and supported by the Youth and Sports Ministry, the Education Ministry, and the Cheerleading Association and Registry of Malaysia.

CHEER, the first nationwide cheerleading competition, debuted in 2000.

Originally a competition that only featured the All-Girls and the Co-Ed Division with AllBoys and Mixed Teams, CHEER has expanded to include the University Co-Ed Elite Division last year.
