BWF deputy president on the run

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Badminton World Federation (BWF) deputy president Gustavo Salazar Delgado is believed to be on the run over an alleged bribery scandal in his native Peru.

Delgado, a winner of 19 Peruvian singles and doubles titles in the 1980s, attended the recent Sudirman Cup in Gold Coast, Australia, last week. But he failed to turn up for the BWF’s annual general meeting (AGM), which was also held there.

The 52-year-old businessman is reported to be involved in a large-scale corruption and money laundering scandal in the construction sector in Peru.

Delgado joined the BWF council in 2007 before he was elected as the No. 2 to president Poul-Erik Hoyer of Denmark in 2013.

He won the deputy president post unopposed on May 20 for a four-year term.
