PETALING JAYA: Muslims across the country will take part in a special campaign tomorrow to promote a better understanding of the teachings in the Quran.

The main event of the Malaysia #QuranHour campaign will be held at the Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin mosque in Putrajaya from 11.30am.

More than 10,000 participants will recite the Quran and take part in activities for a deeper understanding of Islam’s central religious text, said Datuk Hussamuddin Yaacub, founder of the Warisan Ummah Ikhlas Foundation, which is organising the campaign.

With the tagline “A Nation of Compassion”, Hussamuddin said the Malaysia #QuranHour campaign was also relevant in the context of the country’s multi-racial and multi-religious society.

He said the Quran clearly spells out many noble values such as compassion, fairness, respect and tolerance that Muslims must practise.

“If the public, community and political leaders all truly understand and practise the values in the Quran, we will be a more harmonious and tolerant nation.”

Hussamuddin said the campaign aims to encourage Muslims to spend at least an hour a day reciting the Quran and apply its teachings in their daily lives.

“We want to encourage Muslims to interact more with the Quran so that they can gain a better understanding and practise what it teach- es,” he said.

He said many of the root problems Muslims face could be traced back to a poor understanding of Islam and its teachings.

“Some recite the Quran but don’t understand, others understand but don’t practise the true teachings. We must recite, understand and practise what the Quran says.”

Hussamuddin said Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah was expected to attend the main event at the mosque.

The event will be broadcast live on Astro Oasis.

Simultaneous events will also be held in various locations, including mosques, surau, libraries, government offices, private companies, schools and higher education institutions.

The Malaysia #QuranHour is now into its third year, and is held before a wider programme known as World #QuranHour.

This year’s World #QuranHour will be held on Aug 31 and will be celebrated in various countries around the world.
