Errant bus drivers to be given summonses on the spot

KUALA LANGAT: Bus drivers who flout the law during the coming festive season risk being given summonses on the spot by undercover Road Transport Department (JPJ) officers.

JPJ director-general Datuk Seri Nadzri Siron said the undercover officers would now expose errant bus drivers on the spot and haul them to the nearest JPJ enforcement base station.

“The drivers will also be fined on the spot unlike the previous operations, where officers would wait until the end of the journey to fine them,’’ he told the press after launching Ops Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2017 in Banting yesterday.

The operation runs from today till July 2. A total of 3,128 enforcement officers and 815 vehicles will be involved.

On another matter, Nadzri said that 77,242 traffic summonses have been issued since the new Awas system was launched on April 15.

“Of the total, 68,830 were for speeding and 8,412 for beating the red light.

“A total of 5,751 summonses have been paid and the collections was more than RM862,000,’’ he said.

Awas is the combination of the Automated Enforcement System (AES) and traffic offence demerit system Kejara.

Aimed at reducing the number of road accidents and deaths, the system will “award” demerit points to offenders.

They will be given incremental penalties for every 20 points, which range from a warning to having their licences suspended.

Nadzri noted that the camera at KM375.9 of the North-South Expressway (southbound) near Slim River in Perak recorded the highest number of speeding cases at 27,170.
