PETALING JAYA: Youngsters Jellson JabillinHanis Nazirul Jaya Surya showed they are up for the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games challenge after grabbing a surprise silver for Malaysia in the Asian Diving Cup in Macau.

The two 16-year-olds chalked up a six-dive total of 362.88 points to clinch the silver in the men’s 10m platform synchro final at the Macau Olympic Aquatic Centre yesterday.

China’s Yang Ling-Cao Lizhi took the gold with a 414.48 total while Singapore’s Jonathan Chan-James Chong fought their way to the bronze with 341.70 points.

It was a remarkable performance by JellsonHanis as it was their first international outing in the 10m platform synchro. The duo now stand a good chance of retaining the gold won by Chew Yiwei-Ooi Tze Liang at the 2015 Singapore SEA Games as they finished away ahead of their South-East Asian rivals.

Indonesia’s Adityo Restu Putra-Andriyan were placed fourth on 330.87 points while Thailand’s Theerapat Siriboon-Yotsawat-Junitaphadawon finished fifth with a 311.43 total.

Said Malaysia head coach Yang Zhuliang: “Jellson and Hanis still lack international experience but they showed they are potential gold medallists for the gold at the SEA Games.”

Ooi Tze Liang also had cause to rejoice as he bagged the bronze in the men’s 3m springboard. Tze Liang, the reigning Glasgow Commonwealth Games champion, posted 398.20 points to snatch the last spot on the podium behind two Chinese divers.

Chen Linhai, the reigning world junior champion, took the gold with a 503.50 total ahead Diao Zhiguang (413.30).

It was the first medal of the year for the 23-year-old Tze Liang.

Nur Dhabitah Sabri-Cheong Jun Hoong grabbed a second silver for Malaysia when they recorded 257.91 points in the women’s 3m springboard synchro.

China’s Xia Bingqing-Xia Yujie, the Australian Grand Prix winner last year, took the gold with 302.19 points.
