Youth gets 15 years’ jail for ‘donating’ to IS terrorists
KUALA LUMPUR: A former college student paid a heavy price for dealing with terrorist property when he was sentenced to a total of 15 years’ jail by the High Court here.
Hasrianto Matan, 21, pleaded guilty yesterday to depositing RM300 in three transactions into a Maybank account belonging to one Bukhori Che Noor for the benefit of terrorist Muhammad Wanndy Mohamed Jedi.
The offences were committed on April 4, May 1 and June 5 last year at the USJ Maybank branch in Subang, Selangor.
He was charged with three counts of indirectly dealing with the terrorist property of Muhammad Wanndy under Section 130Q(1) of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to 30 years, or a fine, and liability to forfeiture of any property so dealt with.
Judicial Commissioner Ab Karim Ab Rahman said Hasrianto’s action of wiring in the money reflected his support for the Islamic State (IS) militant group.
“Although the money was meant as infaq (donation), it was not used as infaq but to help terrorists,” he said.
“Terrorist movements always depend on infaq to help further their agenda and you know that because you were always in contact with Muhammad Wanndy,” he said.
Ab Karim sentenced Hasrianto to five years’ jail on each count and ordered the sentences to run concurrently from the date of his arrest on July 17 last year.
According to the statement of facts, Hasrianto joined IS through the Telegram app and communicated with Muhammad Wanndy through WhatsApp.
Following a check with Maybank, it was found that the account number that appeared on seized transaction slips belonged to Bukhori, who had been instructed by Muhammad Wanndy to manage and collect funds from members of the Gagak Hitam Telegram group.
In mitigation, lawyer Faridah Mohamed, who represented Hasrianto, said it was her client’s first offence and his initial contact with Muhammad Wanndy was merely to know what was happening in Syria.
DPP Azlina Rasdi said Hasrianto had committed a serious offence.
