KUALA LUMPUR: Police have identified 10 traffic hotspots in the city during the annual Ops Selamat Hari Raya period.

City deputy police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mazlan Lazim said the areas are Jalan Kepong, Jalan Cheras, Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2), Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Ipoh, Jalan Kuching, Jalan Ampang, Jalan Klang Lama, Jalan Duta and Jalan Sungai Besi.

“We will be paying special attention to these stretches to minimise accidents and road mishaps.

“We have deployed 320 traffic police personnel to make sure everything runs smoothly during the festive period,” he said after launching the campaign at KL Sentral yesterday.

DCP Mazlan said in the first three days of the operation, which runs until July 2, there had already been 638 accidents with one fatality.

He said the accidents were mainly caused by speeding, running red lights, jaywalking, drink driving and using the phone while driving.

Of the 638 accidents recorded, over 60% involved motorcycles.

Police also urged those going back to their hometowns to register with them.

“So far, 156 households have registered with us. This is to help us coordinate patrols to better prevent house breakins,” he said.

DCP Mazlan also said police had deployed 129 multipurpose vehicles and 176 motorcycle patrols, in addition to the usual patrol beats to help keep an eye on vacant houses.

“Other agencies we are working closely with include the Fire and Rescue Department, Road Transport Department, Land Public Transport Commission, Road Safety Department, Civil Defence Force, Rela and Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research,” he added.
