Common sense should prevail over simple rules

-

I RECENTLY visited the Immigration Department at the KDN Wilayah Persekutuan Complex. The service was excellent despite it being just two days after the long holiday in conjunction with Hari Raya.

The complex houses many departments providing various services to a huge clientele. However, the number of parking bays available seemed to be extremely limited. As a result, vehicles were parked along both sides of the road leading up to the complex.

I noticed another government building beside the KDN complex. It was the Syariah Court House. The parking bays there were totally empty so I decided to park there rather than along the road where my car might obstruct traffic.

As I was leaving my car, a security officer guarding the premises approached me and asked what I was doing there. When I told him I was going to the next building, he said that parking in the area was exclusive to visitors of the Syariah Court.

I politely asked the officer if this was a policy of the court, and he said it was a directive of the director. I thanked the officer and reparked my car along the road where more than 30 cars were parked.

Common sense seems to be lacking nowadays. People are getting very rigid with simple rules and, in the process, burdening everyone else. Common courtesy should still be practised despite the law; use the latter as a guide rather than rigidly following it.

I hope the director concerned would take a good look at the number of cars parked along the road, obstructing traffic leading up to his office, and make the just decision of allowing the public to park at the empty parking bays.
