PETALING JAYA: Cycling has enabled the Argentinian ambassador to Malaysia Manuel Balaguer Salas and his wife Guadalupe Cernusco Cornejo to discover the best that Malaysia has to offer.

“We cycle every weekend and it’s a good way to meet people – to socialise and get in touch with locals.

“Nature is wonderful in Malaysia and I feel so well and relaxed after cycling. It’s a complete sport,” said Salas, who started cycling long distance after he was posted to Malaysia a year ago.

The couple cycles about 70km on weekends in areas such as Hulu Langat, Janda Baik, Putrajaya and Fraser’s Hill with fellow cyclists. They are also part of a huge community of cyclists here.

Cernusco, who has always been an avid cyclist, said she used to commute back from work by bicycle in Argentina.

Besides the weekend excursions, Cernusco also cycles on Wednesdays with a group of women.

“I like how cycling allows us to see the country. We get to see chickens and families of monkeys.

“We go into villages and I get to admire the plants in people’s gardens. After our ride, we reward ourselves with local food like nasi lemak and roti canai.

“To us, it’s amazing,” said Cernusco, who has started picked up some phrases in Malay so she can speak to the people she meets during her excursions.

The couple and their children are excited to take part in Ride for Malaysia, a cycling event organised by the Star Media Group and property developer Sunsuria Bhd.

The event will be flagged off at 6.30am at Sunsuria City on July 30.
