High Court jails two men for supporting IS

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here sentenced two men to jail for supporting Islamic State (IS) and keeping terrorism-related images on their mobile phones.

In the first case, a 22-year-old jobless man was given eight years’ jail.

Wan Mohamad Nur Firdaus Abd Wahab committed the offence by way of bai’ah (pledging oath of loyalty) in a Telegram chat group called Gagak Hitam (Black Crow).

The accused used the name Lat Firdaus in the chat.

The offence was committed at a house in Jalan Cili 24/28D, Seksyen 24, Shah Alam, at 7.32am on March 30 last year.

He was also sentenced to five years in jail for owning 23 terrorism-related images in his mobile phone at the same place at 8.35am on Sept 25 last year.

Judicial Commissioner Ab Karim Ab Wahab ordered the sentences to run concurrently from the date of arrest.

Wan Mohamad pleaded guilty to the charges last month.

He asked the court to mete out a lenient sentence as he wished to return to his studies.

The former factory worker said he was influenced by the chat group and was not aware of current affairs relating to terrorism as he spent most of his time working.

Ab Karim said what the accused did was wrong.

“The ba’iah (pledging loyalty) that you’ve done in the chat group clearly showed loyalty.

“Without support, IS would not exist,” the judge said before passing the sentence.

DPP Mohamad Fadzlan Mohd Nor prosecuted while lawyer Muhd Daniel Baharudin represented the accused.

Meanwhile, assistant cook Rosmizam Che Din was sentenced to six years’ jail for supporting the terrorist group and possessing photos and videos relating to terrorism.

He also pledged loyalty to IS by way of bai’ah in the Gagak Hitam chat group using the name Zam Rosden.

The offence was committed at a house in Subang at 12.33am on March 30 last year.

He also admitted to possessing 42 images and two videos on terrorism at a supermarket’s car park in Persiaran Subang Permai, Subang Jaya, at 1.30pm on July 15 last year.

High Court judge Justice Mohd Sofian Abd Razak said the 29-yearold should have been more mature in using his mobile phone application and not be influenced by a terrorist group.

“Although you only made a pledge, it showed you would die for IS.

“You have to accept this sentence by the court. If we do not put a stop to this, you may become one of those who would commit suicide for them,” he said before passing the sentence.

Rosmizam was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment for supporting the IS and another two years for having terrorism-related materials.

The court ordered the jail terms to run concurrently from the date of arrest.

The accused was represented by lawyer Mohd Yusoff Ag Lah while DPP Munirah Shamsudin @ Baharum prosecuted.
