KUALA LUMPUR: Some 20,000 visitors are expected at the Malaysia International Retail and Franchise (MIRF) Exhibition 2017 organised by the Malaysia Retail Chain Association (MRCA).

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, who officiated the launch of the event, said the exhibition, in its second year, had shown good improvement from its first edition.

“The number and quality of exhibitors have improved com- pared to last year and there are also representatives from other countries,” said Hamzah yesterday.

The retail sector was one of the most important sectors in the country, he said, adding that there was a need for retailers and small and medium enterprises to keep improving.

These businesses accounted for 65% of the nation’s employment, said Hamzah.

“I would like to see the industry create more jobs. By doing this, it will give confidence to the people about our country and will attract people from all over the world,” he said.

Later at a press conference, Hamzah urged the industry players to play a stronger role in the economy.

He also encouraged the industry players to work closely with the Government.

MRCA president Datuk Garry Chua said the MIRF 2016 fair recorded RM50mil in sales and a 20% growth is expected this year.

“For MIRF 2017, 260 exhibitors from about 10 countries including Taiwan, Singapore, China and the Philippines are taking part,” he said.

The exhibition is endorsed by the ministry and Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade).

Themed “Breaking Boundaries”, it is held from July 13 to July 16, showcasing food and beverage, property, education, healthcare, media and electronics.

MIRF 2017 organising chairman Datuk Liew Bin encouraged visitors and retailers to use the platform to interact, transact and forge new collaborations.

“It will also provide a focus on the next wave of retail, franchising, licensing, technology, future role of in-store and the vital engagement between retailers and consumers,” he said.

MIRF 2017 is being held in collaboration with Mah Sing Group as the Diamond Sponsor, the ministry and Tourism Malaysia as supporting sponsors and the corporate patrons are Maxis, Malayan Banking, Fusionex and Mastercard.
