Good going at Ladies’ Open
One of Royal Selangor’s showpieces makes its mark on the local calendar
A DISCIPLINED performance of controlled aggression out on the course by Loy Hee Ying highlighted the 43rd Royal Selangor Golf Club (RSGC) Ladies Amateur Open and led to her retaining the Tuanku Bahiyah Trophy with a massive 10-stroke victory at the Kuala Lumpur venue.
It was a deserved win for Hee Ying and it duly brought the curtain down on an event that this year stood out as among the best yet and certainly one of the more celebrated amateur tournaments this season. She will now focus on the participation of her second SEA Games next month,
The event featured a fair-sized foreign field that had Brunei’s Vanessa Bouvet finish runner-up in the Overall Gross category with a three-day 218 and another member of Malaysia’s SEA Games squad, Nurdurriya Daiman, end her bid in third place.
The nett individual crown went to nine-handicapper Grace Chin Jun Li, who played under the Malaysian Ladies’ Golf Association (Malga) flag and signed for a 140 total to capture the Toh Puan Norashikin Trophy.
With the top-five places in this category going to Malga players, six-handicapper G. Vinisha was second on 142 and Noraishah Alisa (4 h’cap) third with a 143 total. This was a 36-hole competition.
The Piala Datin Azian Trophy for the Gross Team category went to Malga One, who finished with 296 . Comprising Nur Nurdurriya, Winnie Ng Yu Xuan and Qistina Balqis Azhar, they won by six strokes from Malga Two, who were made up of Geraldine Wong Xiao Xuan, Liyana Durisic and Noraishah Alisa.
MSN Johor managed 308 for third place. The two-strong team of Hee Ying and Nurdiyana Aqilah Khalim did themselves proud in an event where the two best scores on the day counted.
Malga Four won the Piala Clarissa Lee Trophy after claiming the Nett Team honours with a 282 effort. The champions comprised Zulaikah Nurziana Nasser, Vinisha and Grace Chin.
Vietnam Golf Association signed for a 291 that left Hanako Kawasaki, Nguyen Thao My and Doan Xuan Khue Minh in second place, while Malga Three – Audrey Tan Wei Yen, Norezrina Alisa and Allycia Gan Pheik Wen were third on 296.
Tournament organising chair, Datuk Yasmin Yusuff, said they were pleased with how things turned out and looked forward to a bigger and even better tournament next.
“2018 will the 125th anniversary of Royal Selangor Golf Club and we intend to make it a grand event as we possibly can. The tournament has grown over the years and we will endeavour to make the 44th edition a really special one.”
Tournament director and chief referee Lee Tuck Chew said they wer re impressedi d with ith the calibre of entries this year and added that it went off without a greatg fuss.
The RSGC Ladies Ama at teur Open is recognised by th he e R&A as a World Amateu urr Golf Rankings event. It also served as part of a qualifier for the Asian Pacific Golf Confederation Junior Championships in
Hong Kong.
