‘The Flash’ set to streak into Malaysia

- By PHILIP BERK

SAN DIEGO: Grant Gustin can’t wait to visit Malaysia in December to savour the local cuisine and soak up the culture.

The American actor, best known for his role in the TV series The Flash, is engaged to Andrea Thoma, who is of half-Kadazan.

The couple is set to visit Malaysia end of the year, Gustin revealed at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association press conference at Comic-Con International 2017 over the weekend.

“Trying new food usually scares me but when it comes to the taste of Malaysian foods that I have had, I am into it,” said Gustin about what he is looking forward to the most here.

When he made the announcement of the couple’s upcoming visit, Thoma – who was present at the press conference – cringed. Gustin assured her: “It’s OK, honey, because it’s going to be announced at some point.”

At the press conference to promote Season Four of The Flash, Gustin also revealed that he met Thoma through social media.

“She went to school with my brother in Norfolk, Virginia, where I am from. I didn’t know her then. The two of us connected via social media because she was my brother’s friend.

“I was with him in New York at the time and she popped up on my page, and I was like, ‘Who is this?’ And he gave me the rundown a little bit, and I followed her, and the rest is history.”

Gustin’s knowledge of Malaysia and its culture is limited to what Thoma has told him, so the actor said he was excited to find out more about the country himself.

“In December, we will see what it is about the culture that I would love, and I am sure there are things that I will love.

“I have learned some Malay, but it’s pretty basic stuff, little phrases, which I always get wrong,” the actor said.

Gustin first shot to fame when he appeared in musical drama Glee in 2011. However, it was his turn as Barry Allen in the superhero series The Flash that propelled him to international stardom.

Thoma, whose mother is Sabahan, works as a physical therapist.

The full interview with Gustin will appear in Star2 next month.
