Police station upgrades being planned

Bukit Aman: RM44mil needed to implement modern policing in Kuala Lumpur

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman has plans to upgrade the 22 police stations in the city to better serve the people.

Its management director Comm Datuk Seri Zulkifli Abdullah said the police stations would also have better equipment for personnel, including protective gear for police officers and logistics tools.

He said the force, however, would need an allocation of RM44mil which it hoped to get under Budget 2018.

Non-lethal weapons like stun guns, body cameras and other system enhancements would also be sought.

“Modern policing has become part of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s KPI and we hope services at the 22 stations can be upgraded,” he said after a meeting with modern policing committee members at the Pantai police station yesterday.

Comm Zulkifli said the modern policing programme was a collaboration between the Home Affairs Ministry, Pemandu and the Malaysian Digital Economy Corp (MDeC) aimed at speeding up tasks and giving police personnel ample time to investigate cases.

“With the implementation of modern policing at our police stations in Kuala Lumpur, we hope to deliver services that meet world standards,” he said.

Currently, only the Pantai and Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) police stations are equipped with full modern policing components as part of a pioneer project.

Comm Zulkifli said his team planned to monitor the performance between these two stations and those without modern policing components.

“We will compare these stations to measure whether services have improved. This will help the Government to decide on how to further expand modern policing to other police stations in the Klang Valley,” he said.

Asked if modern policing would eventually be expanded nationwide, Comm Zulkifli said the force remained hopeful of this.

“We’ve received positive response from communities where modern policing is practised such as in TTDI but the nationwide expansion will take time and resources,’’ he added.
