that it’s Global Tiger Day on Saturday? Saturday

-

> The idea of having Global Tiger Day was decided at the 2010 St Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia, held to protect the natural habitats of tigers and raise public awareness and support for their conservation.

> The tiger ( Panthera tigris) is the largest cat species. There are six surviving subspecies: the Bengal, Indochinese, Malayan, Siberian, South China and Sumatran tigers. > It is estimated that there are only 3,000 to 4,500 tigers left in the wild. The most numerous subspecies is the Bengal tiger (2,500 in the wild) while the South China tiger is the most critically endangered (only about 50 in captivity, none in the wild). > The largest tiger is the Siberian, which can weigh over 300kg. The Sumatran is the smallest, growing up to 140kg.

> Every tiger is unique, with no two having the same stripe ppattern on their body.y > Despite their weight and size, when running at full speed tigers can reach 65kph.

> A tiger’s night vision is said to be six times better than a human’s. > Illegal poaching is the main threat to tigers, which are hunted for their bones, skin and teeth. > The Malayan tiger is critically endangered with an estimated 250-340 left in the wild.

> The National Tiger Conservation Action Plan was adopted in 2009 to increase the population of wild tigers in Malaysia to 1,000 by 2020.
