Belaun: Civil service hired 133,282 people from 2013
THERE were 133,282 new appointments in the civil service between 2013 and June this year, with Malays making up the bulk of the recruitment, the Dewan Rakyat was told.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun said that the appointments continued to decline following the Government’s decision to optimise its resources in April 2014 by controlling and limiting appointments in the public sector.
“The total number of new employees according to race is: 100,627 (75.5%) Malays, 9,059 (6.79%) Sabah bumiputras and 7,696 (5.77%) Chinese.
“This is followed by 7,036 (5.28%) Sarawak bumiputras, 5,886 (4.42%) Indians, 2,182 (1.64%) from other races and 796 (0.6%) orang asli,” he told Datuk Liang Teck Meng (BN-Simpang Renggam) during Question Time.
Liang had asked the Government for the number of appointments into the public service from 2013 according to age, gender, race and state.
Entulu said aside from education and merit, the Government has no specific policy to ensure a fair balance among races is represented in the civil service.
He said the top five states with the highest appointment into the civil service were Kelantan with 17,806 , Sabah (13,850), Sarawak (13,845), Perak (12,517) and Johor (11,848).
He said the largest number of appointments were women with 80,625 (60.49%) compared with 52,657 (39.51%) men between 2013 and June this year.
“The appointment of more women in the public sector was largely due to more female applicants or graduates compared to males,” he said.
