V Shem and Wee Kiong muscle up for the world stage

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Don’t be surprised to see Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong getting more muscular these days.

The men’s doubles specialists are pumping iron to add more power to their game as they bid to mount a strong challenge for honours at the World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, from Aug 21-27.

The Rio Olympic silver medallists have been putting extra efforts into their physical training programme since losing in the first round of the Australian Open in Sydney in June.

V Shem-Wee Kiong now wear weight vests during their training sessions as well as undergo specially drawn-up fitness programmes by the National Sports Institute’s (NSI) physical trainers.

Wee Kiong is enjoying the workout despite being pushed to the limit in each session.

“I take back home a bundle of T-shirts soaked with sweat after training every day,” said Wee Kiong.

“The NSI team is helping us manage our physical conditions. They’re doing a good job.”

Wee Kiong-V Shem enjoyed their best season last year. Besides the Olympic silver, they won the Denmark Open and the World Superseries Finals in Dubai.

This year, they have yet to reach a semi-final appearance.

“We’ve not been playing well this year but we’re working hard to get back to the top.

“What’s important is to peak at the World Championships. And we hope for a favourable draw too,” said Wee Kiong.

The draw for the World Championships will be conducted by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) at their new headquarters at the Naza Tower Platinum Park in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 9.
