Dad wants action on teacher who beat son

-

JOHOR BARU: A father claiming his nine-year-old son was hit, slapped and kicked by his Moral Studies teacher is outraged at the seeming lack of action over the incident.

P. Shanmugavelan, 39, claimed school authorities told him that an internal investigation would be carried out, after the teacher admitted the incident had happened at the primary school in Taman Universiti.

“The whole class witnessed the incident and the teacher was not even sorry for his actions, yet the school allows him to continue teaching the class,” he said.

Shanmugavelan said the teacher used a hard plastic table cover to hit his son on the head in the July 24 incident.

“My son was playing with his friends and threw a classmate’s shoe from the third floor. The teacher punished him by hitting him with the table cover, kicking him in the abdomen and slapping his face,” he claimed yesterday.

Shanmugavelan said his son came home complaining of pain and told them what had happened.

“We took him to the nearest clinic, the doctor confirmed that his head was mildly swollen and gave him painkillers,” he said.

The doctor has confirmed the injury in writing, he added.

Shanmugavelan and his wife went to the school the next day and were given an assurance that action would be taken.

He said his son continued to complain of headaches five days after the incident and was taken to a hospital on July 29.

“The doctors did a CT scan and found minor scars and bleeding. He was admitted for two days for observation,” said Shanmugavelan, adding that he lodged a police report the same day.

Disappointed with the school’s inaction, he also filed a complaint with the Johor Bahru District Education Office on July 30.

Johor Baru North OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Taib Ahmad said the case has been been classified as voluntarily causing hurt.
