KUALA LUMPUR: The whole is greater than the sum of its parts – that’s how Axiata Group Bhd president and group CEO Datuk Seri Jamaludin Ibrahim views unity.

“Unity is getting people to work together as a team and produce something better than they do as individuals.

“In fact, in Axiata, unity is related to diversity because we believe that diversity allows us to get the best out of everyone,” he said.

With staff from over 42 different nationalities, diversity is a strategy that the company has implemented and this has given it the opportunity to open up to new ideas, added Jamaludin,

Having lived and studied within a multi-cultural background, he said this created the foundation for the belief that diversity is the best way to contribute to the country.

Diversity, said Jamaludin, has strengthened unity in Malaysia.

He said due to various issues, Malaysians may have become less united but he believes the community at large wants that unity and

“The question now is how do we bring back unity? I believe it has to be done through education as well as the place or neighbourhood we live in.

“I think there has to be a purposeful, conscious strategy to avoid building neighbourhoods with a dominant race,” said Jamaludin.

He joins a growing number of corporate figures, influencers and unity-loving Malaysians who have all pledged to join the #AnakAnakMalaysia Walk 2017 taking place in Dataran Kemerdekaan, Shah Alam, on Aug 27 in conjunction with National Day.
