The measure of a true blue Malaysian
FITNESS model Kit Mah (pic) reminisces about his formative years and quintessential pastimes that shaped him into the Malaysian he is today.
Where was your favourite childhood hangout spot?
The playground near my home. I could run around freely and hunt for insects, grasshoppers and frogs. Curiosity about these creatures led me to read up on them, which led to my deep love for books.
What do you miss about the Malaysia of your childhood?
Gathering in friends’ homes for meals and to watch TV. Sadly, nobody does this anymore. In the past, these activities fostered facetoface close friendships, unlike smartphone and social media interactions now.
Tell us a funny story from your schooldays.
When I was in Standard Six, a rich classmate would pay me to draw his favourite cars and cartoon characters. Mum found my stash of cash and panicked, thinking I was involved in something illegal. She told my teacher and principal, who were equally alarmed. After an investigation, there were huge sighs of relief all round.
What does being a Malaysian mean to you?
It means being humble, yet proud of ourselves, our cultures, traditions, ethics and achievements. We are a united people and we believe in tolerance and living peacefully.
