Izzati: I’m ready to play through pain barrier for Malaysia

- By KNG ZHENG GUAN

PETALING JAYA: Captain Nur Izzati Yaakob

is ready to put her body on the line to defend Malaysia’s title in women’s basketball at the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games.

The 27-year-old point guard picked up a knock in Malaysia’s tour of Taiwan last month. As a result, she only featured in two of the team’s six matches.

The 1.64m Izzati, who also competed in the 2013 and 2015 Games, is however confident she will be fit for the Aug 19-30 Games.

“I pulled a muscle in my left leg during the second match in Taiwan. After that I was rest- ed for the remaining matches,” said Izzati.

“I am recovering well so I hope to be fit when the Games start. I am ready to play through the pain barrier if needed because we badly want to defend our gold in front of the home crowd.

“There will be extra pressure on us but I’m confident that the team is well prepared and the home support will give us an edge.”

Malaysia, who have won the gold a record 10 times, will face six other teams – Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam and Myanmar – in the round-robin competition.

Izzati believes the Thais, the seven-time winners, will pose the biggest threat.

“The Thais have recalled most of their veterans for these Games. They will be our toughest rivals.

“But Indonesia and the Philippines are no pushovers. It will be 50-50 against them and we cannot let our guard down,” said Izzati.

Malaysia will tip off their campaign against Vietnam on Aug 20.

In the men’s event, Malaysia are drawn in Group A with the Philippines, Thailand and Myanmar. Group B comprises Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

The Malaysians face Myanmar in their first match on Aug 20.
