Wei is honoured to be given the chance to skipper the men’s basketball team at the

Kuala Lumpur

SEA Games.

And the 33-year-old Li Wei hopes to go out with a bang in his third and last Games.

Malaysia have not won a medal since their bronze finish at the 2007 Games in Thailand.

“This is definitely my last Games. I was in the squad in 2007 and I want to savour the joy of winning a medal again,” said Li Wei.

“With the crowd support, I believe we can do it as the team is in good shape,” added the Johorean.

In the run-up to the Games, Malaysia finished second at the Maba International Basketball Invitation Championships in June.

The team also went on a 12-day playing tour of New Zealand last month. They won three of their six matches.

Malaysia, who finished fifth at the 2015 Singapore Games, need to finish among the top two in Group A to qualify for the semi-finals.

However, they have a daunting task against 17-time champions the Philippines, Thailand and Myanmar. Group B consists of Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

Malaysia, who won their only gold at the 1989 KL Games, take on Myanmar in their first match on Aug 20.
