Virtual and augmented reality fun for visitors to the Games
KUALA LUMPUR: Those visiting the Kuala Lumpur Sports City for the 2017 SEA Games will have a chance to “meet and compete” with some of their favourite national sports icons.
100Plus, one of the 41 sponsors involved in the Games, has invested RM3mil to create the largest twin domes or Rumah Malaysia in the country to house virtual games and augmented reality (AR) technology.
SKY Events Management Sdn Bhd project manager Angeline Chuah said the domes and a special tent in the shape of the number 100 took two weeks to complete.
“The domes, which can house 600 visitors, are recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records as the largest in the country.
“We have also created a virtual reality badminton and football game to allow visitors to experience the excitement of the Games,” she said at the site yesterday.
Chuah said visitors will get a chance to indulge in AR technology for the first time.
AR is a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are “augmented” by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data.
“We have selected seven wellknown athletes who are 100Plus ambassadors for visitors to take pictures with.
“They are badminton stars Datuk Lee Chong Wei, Chan Peng Soon, Goh Liu Ying, Tan Wee Kiong, Goh V Shem and Goh Jin Wei, and sprinter Khairul Hafiz Jantan,” she added.
Visitors to the domes stand to win limited edition SEA Games jackets and T-shirts, 38 different Rimau mascot badges and mugs.
Chuah said there would also be a huge LED screen for visitors to watch live broadcast of the Games on Astro Arena.
She said a celebration will be held at one of the domes if Malaysia wins its 100th gold medal at the Games.
“It will be a special highlight the moment Malaysia clinches it.
“The domes will glow with golden
lights,” Chuah added. Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) which is occupying one of the twin domes has set up several virtual games challenges.
A TM spokesman said one of the games involved challenging national cyclist Mohd Azizulhasni Awang, known as Malaysia’s Pocket Rocketman, to a bicycle race.
Entrance to the Rumah Malaysia domes is free. It will be open to visitors from 9am to 10pm during the Games which starts today.
