Working closely with police keeps this school cool

PETALING JAYA: A secondary school in a Selangor suburb has enjoyed a successful partnership with its police liaison officer in keeping the disciplinary situation under control.

Insp Mohd Mansur Akmaron, 35, has been the liaison officer for SMK Bandar Puchong Jaya (A) for the past three years.

During that time, he has delivered motivational talks to the students and advised teachers on disciplinary matters.

Just two weeks ago, he gave a talk to the students about bullying.

“If we receive invitations to attend events, or see to a problem, we will go.

“We will help wherever we can,” he said.

Insp Mohd Mansur said he also keeps an eye on the school during his usual crime prevention rounds.

“The teachers sometimes consult me on disciplinary matters, and other problems such as theft,” he said, adding that response from the school had been good so far.

Noor Fazilla Hani, an administrative assistant at the school, said its collaboration with the police “has helped minimise disciplinary problems in the school”.

“If students know the school is under the care of a police officer, they would be more careful not to break the rules,” she said.

Form Two student Iman Athirah, 14, said the talks delivered by police officers also covered subjects such as sexual assault and vandalism.

“The talks are good for us. We are taught the importance of avoiding bad habits, such as smoking.

“Students can also ask police officers questions during these sessions,” she said.

Fifth Former Looi Xiao Yi, 17, said she had attended the talks every year since she entered Form One.

“It is up to each student to heed advice from the police.

“It’s generally known that we shouldn’t do bad things.

“But some people may not realise they are doing something wrong until they listen to the talks,” she said.
