Natasha gunning for good result to motivate sister

FENCER Natasha Ezzra Abu Bakar intends to set a good example for younger sister Nur Afrina at the KL SEA Games.

This is the first time that the siblings are representing Malaysia in the same event.

Natasha, who turned 26 on Aug 2, is Malaysia’s top female prospect in foil while Nur Afrina, who will turn 16 in November, is making her Games debut in sabre.

Natasha, who won a bronze at Jakarta 2011, wants to get off to a good start to give her sister extra motivation.

“This is the first time we’re in the same competition and I’m definitely all fired up,” said Natasha.

“We encourage each other a lot and I want to set a good example as a senior in the team. My event starts first and if I can deliver a good result it should help motivate her too.”

The women’s foil will start on Monday at Hall 6 of the Malaysian International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MiTEC). The women’s sabre will start on Aug 23.

And Natasha, who underwent a twomonth training stint in South Korea prior to the Games, is confident of landing the gold medal.

“I’ve been to three SEA Games but my best was only a bronze in 2011. I definitely want to do better than that,” said Natasha.

“Since we’re the hosts, I want to prove to everyone that I’m capable of delivering the gold. Singapore and Vietnam will be our strongest rivals but I’m well-prepared and confident.”

The other women fencers in the squad are Tyanne Fong (foil), Natania Tai Suet Li (sabre), Yap Jing Xuan and Che Ku Nur Aida Che Ku Rahim (epee).

The men’s team comprise Joshua Koh I-Jie, Mohd Roslan Mohd (epee), Hans Yoong, Tristan Cheng (foil), Syed Adam Emir Putra and Ahmad Syukran Shahir (sabre).
