Pupils brimming with patriotism
IPOH: SJKC Ave Maria Convent pupil Evelyn Phang is all smiles as she proudly shows off her Star Media Group’s Raise The Flag initiative T-shirt template decorated with Malaysian motifs.
Utilising every inch of space, the 12-year-old drew people, the Jalur Gemilang, the Twin Tower, tropical fruits and the rafflesia.
“There are just so many things related to Malaysia. I have tried to include as many as possible,” the Year Six pupil said.
Year Five pupil Loh Chai Ling, 11, decorated her template with a hornbill, a tiger and the Jalur Gemilang.
“Animals are the first things that come to my mind when I think of Malaysia,” she said.
The school ordered 844 copies of the Aug 18 issue of The Star to get the template, which was cut out from a special four-page spread.
The spread also allows Malaysians to cut out and assembly their own mini Jalur Gemilang, which was used by the pupils during a special assembly to celebrate National Day.
Principal Tan Hooi Kuan said the school would play its role to cultivate and instil the spirit of patriotism among the pupils.
“We really want them to emphasise on 1Malaysia, to have unity despite our different racial and cultural backgrounds,” she said.
The Raise The Flag campaign aims to strengthen national pride among Malaysians and will run until Malaysia Day on Sept 16.
Aset Kayamas is the main sponsor while Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd is the co-sponsor.
Participants can show off their best pose with the template and flags by posting their pictures on social media with the hashtag #RaiseTheFlagMY and a short love note to Malaysia. The pictures can also be shared on the “RaiseTheFlagMY” Facebook page.
Submissions with at least 15 persons “wearing” the T-shirts and waving the flags stand to win a RM4,000 buffet for 100 pax at their school/office/home from Original Kayu Nasi Kandar.
