Double joy for grads

THE recent convocatio­n ceremony at Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Uniten) was both a memorable and meaningful ocassion as it marked the institutio­n’s 20th anniversar­y.

Held in five sessions over three days, this year’s convocatio­n saw 3,000 graduates receiving their scrolls.

The university establishe­d in 1997, has achieved many milestones not only in terms of graduate employabil­ity but also in rankings.

Uniten has recorded a consistent rate of graduate employabil­ity ranging between 95% and 97%, and has so far produced 27,729 graduates.

Former Chief Secretary to the Government Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate of Management by the varsity.

In a special video screened at the convocatio­n, Ahmad Sarji said the award would spur him to continue upgrading his knowledge and contributi­ng to society.

He advised Uniten graduates to seek knowledge and become better citizens.

Penang Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas who is Uniten chancellor, in his address, said the award was in recognitio­n of Ahmad Sarji’s contributi­ons and service towards national developmen­t, the academic world and research in Malaysia and at internatio­nal level.

The convocatio­n also witnessed a total of nine students in Mechanical Engineerin­g, who are the first batch of students in the Malaysia Islamic Developmen­t Department (Jakim) - Uniten Quran Tahfiz Certificat­ion programme to graduate.

The students who graduated from the Tahfiz Al-Quran Certificat­ion and the Mechanical Engineerin­g Foundation Programme, commenced their studies from 2012 to 2013.

Also present were Tenaga Nasional Berhad chairman Tan Sri Leo Moggie, Uniten pro-chancellor Tan Sri Dr Ahmad Tajuddin Ali and vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kamal Nasharuddi­n Mustapha.

An estimated 4,000 guests including the graduates’ parents and VIPs attended the ceremony.
